Image
SCSH 1201 (Sustainable Development : Issues, Principles, & Practices) 23/11/2022 & 7/12/2022 (week 7, 8) Wednesday, 10a.m - 12a.m Venue : Class online on Zoom In weeks 7 and 8, what I got in this lesson is that there are challenges to implement sustainable development in terms of social, economic, and environmental. Besides, there also a role of Institutions which are understood as institutional mechanisms are defined as formal systems of rules and indicate what they should facilitate. Institutions in this sense are constitutional rules, organizational rules and standing orders of different governmental bodies, associations, unions, written agreements. Sustainable development is a long-term solution to how we plan our indefinite progress in the future without causing damage to the environment so as to guarantee a safe habitat for the next generations, who will continue to develop their economies, societies, and care for the environment with a similar ideal in mind. It satisfies...

Roles Of Universities & Sustainable Development

Image
SCSH 1201 (Sustainable Development : Issues, Principles, & Practices) 16/11/2022 (week 6) Wednesday, 10a.m - 12a.m Venue : Class online on Zoom In the 6th week the class takes place online on zoom. The topic discussed today is about how universities contribute to sustainable development. Everyone in the class needs to give their own opinion about the question. Among them is that the university needs to increase programs on sustainable development that involve iium students so that they can continue to understand the meaning of sustainable development and practice it in the university. For example, organize a garbage collection program and separate it into plastic, cans, and paper as the clean force has done, which is to provide trash cans with different functions. There are also plans to create a 'green bank', i.e. place it around the iium area where there are no trash cans. Therefore, it helps in the reduction of garbage everywhere. Some are of the view that being a volun...

Sejahtera as Local Concept of Sustainable Development

Image
SCSH 1201 (Sustainable Development : Issues, Principles, & Practices) 9/11/2022 (week 5) Wednesday, 10a.m - 12a.m Venue : Online class on Zoom What I have learn to this lesson was 'sejahtera' acording to the Falsafah Pendidikan Kebangsaan, unhappiness is due to the absence of kesejahteraan diri, the lack of inner peace. As emphasised by the Falsafah Pendidikan Kebangsaan, the concept transcends religious, racial and ethnic boundaries, covering all age groups, regardless of geography and locations. Nurturing it involves more than the Western pop culture practice of reducing stress as it involves a variety of factors, from spiritual to cultural, intellectual and social aspects. Hence, the role of education is key and goes beyond schooling as it is conventionally understood. As sejahtera has ancient and indigenous origins, it carries nuances and subjectivities that cannot be easily taught, just like the African concept of ubuntu, Japanese concept of ikigai, Chinese concept of ...

SCSH 1201 (Sustainable Development : Issues, Principles, & Practices) 2/11/2022 (week 4) Wednesday, 10a.m - 12a.m Venue : IIUM Gallery In this week, the class takes place face-to-face in the IIUM gallery. We are asked to Take interesting photos and group photos in the Gallery. Then write three interesting observations that you can relate to the international framework of sustainable development and Place them in the padlet. The purpose of visiting the IIUM Gallery is to relate the exhibition to our topic which is the role of international conventions for sustainable development. Islam is the main pillar in any matter. The thing that caught our attention is that the IIUM logo is distinctive, each shape symbolizes a special and very important symbol in our lives. For example, the Qur'an in the middle of the logo, it seems to say that the Qur'an is the main source and guide for all Muslims, and it is also the main source in the development of knowledge. From observation we can...

Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development

Image
SCSH 1201 (Sustainable Development : Issues, Principles, & Practices) 26/10/2022 (week 3) Wednesday, 10a.m - 12a.m Venue : Class online on Zoom TODAY'S LESSON, I UNDERSTOOD THE DEFINITION OF MAQASID AL-SHARIAH, WHICH IS INVOLVES REALIZING THE HUMAN WELL-BEING BY ENHANCING WELFARE, OR BENEFIT (MASLAHAH) OF THE PEOPLE ON ONE HAND AND PREVENTING HARM (MAFSADAH) ON THE OTHER. In Islam, sustainability of five things : Life, faith, mind, property, and lineage is considered to be an objective of the law (Maqasid al-Shariah) and Muslims are duty-bound by their religion to ensure the sustenance of these five objectives. This means that the Islamic development is endogenously sustainable since preservation of life is an explicit objective of the Islamic law, which makes only those development efforts Islamically permissible that do not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. And maqasid shariah is related to our daily lives as servants of God on this earth. ...
