Roles Of Universities & Sustainable Development
SCSH 1201 (Sustainable Development : Issues, Principles, & Practices)
16/11/2022 (week 6)
Wednesday, 10a.m - 12a.m
Venue : Class online on Zoom
In the 6th week the class takes place online on zoom. The topic discussed today is about how universities contribute to sustainable development. Everyone in the class needs to give their own opinion about the question.
Among them is that the university needs to increase programs on sustainable development that involve iium students so that they can continue to understand the meaning of sustainable development and practice it in the university. For example, organize a garbage collection program and separate it into plastic, cans, and paper as the clean force has done, which is to provide trash cans with different functions. There are also plans to create a 'green bank', i.e. place it around the iium area where there are no trash cans. Therefore, it helps in the reduction of garbage everywhere.
Some are of the view that being a volunteer for every sustainable development program that is held, the university needs to give rewards such as giving points in the extracurricular activities of the students in order to help them excel in the extracurricular.
In addition, there are also views to create a botanical garden. as we know, at iium has implemented this program. where it is located in the mahallah Halimah area there are plants cultivated by iium students.
Sustainable development calls for us to figure out a way to live and grow our economies while protecting the environment and addressing the social challenges. The significance of community engagement has become crucial for well-functioning, twenty-first-century democracies with the surge in deepening and increasing public engagement globally.
Since it is likely to result in more sustainable public decisions and enhance the livability of local communities, community engagement is not only desirable but necessary if we are to attain viable positive interactions between communities and the private sector players. Engagements with the community are crucial for everyone in individuals, public and private sectors alike.
In conclusion, there are many more ways for universities to contribute to the sustainable development agenda.
