TODAY'S LESSON, I UNDERSTOOD THE DEFINITION OF MAQASID AL-SHARIAH, WHICH IS INVOLVES REALIZING THE HUMAN WELL-BEING BY ENHANCING WELFARE, OR BENEFIT (MASLAHAH) OF THE PEOPLE ON ONE HAND AND PREVENTING HARM (MAFSADAH) ON THE OTHER.

In Islam, sustainability of five things :

Life, faith, mind, property, and lineage is considered to be an objective of the law (Maqasid al-Shariah) and Muslims are duty-bound by their religion to ensure the sustenance of these five objectives.

This means that the Islamic development is endogenously sustainable since preservation of life is an explicit objective of the Islamic law, which makes only those development efforts Islamically permissible that do not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. And maqasid shariah is related to our daily lives as servants of God on this earth. and also as Allah's caliph to fulfill his responsibilities as a human being in fighting for the religion of Islam and continue to be on its path. 


OBJECTIVES OF ISLAMIC LAW :

HIFZ AL-DIN (RELIGION)

HIFZ AL-NAFS (LIFE)

HIFZ AL- ‘AQL (INTELLECT)

HIFZ AL-NASB (LINEAGE)

HIFZ AL-MAL (WEALTH)

THESE OBJECTIVES HAVE A GREAT RESEMBLANCE TO THE UNITED NATIONS’ SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDG).


COMPATIBILITY OF 5P AND MAQASID AL-SHARIAH :

Life = Peace

PEACE AND THE CONDITIONS THAT SUPPORT PEACE ARE ESSENTIAL TO REALISING A PURPOSEFUL AND MEANINGFUL LIFE.

Intellect = People

IT IS THE MOST SIGNIFICANT BLESSINGS WHICH ALLAH (SWT) HAS FAVOURED PEOPLE WITH, SO THAT THEY ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF RIGHT AND WRONG AND DISTINGUISH THE VIRTUE FROM THE VICE.

Lineage = Planet

PROGENY IS RELATED TO THE FUTURE OF THE PLANET WHICH MUST BE SAFE AND PEACEFUL FOR NEW GENERATIONS TO ENJOY.

Wealth = Prosperity

WEALTH IN ISLAM IS REGARDED AS A MEANS OF HUMAN SATISFACTION TO ATTAIN ‘AL-FALAH’ OR PROSPERITY THAT LEADS TO A GOOD LIFE IN THIS WORLD AND HEREAFTER.

Faith = Partnership

ISLAM EMPHASIS INTERFAITH DIALOGUE AS A WAY TO BUILD UNDERSTANDING AND FIND COMMONALITIES FOR THE BENEFIT OF HUMANITY.


IN CONCLUSION, ISLAM LIKE SDG EMPHASIZES THE NEED FOR A BETTER AND HARMONIOUS SOCIETY TO BE ERECTED WITH CONSTRUCTIVE AND PRODUCTIVE ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES WITHOUT DAMAGING THE NATURE.

SCSH 1201 (Sustainable Development : Issues, Principles, & Practices) 14/12/2022 (week 9) Wednesday, 11.15 a.m - 12 a.m Venue : Class online on Zoom In this lesson, there were six common indicator for campus sustainability which is Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation and Setting and Infrastucture. I also found out that there is a sustainable development building near the KICT faculty.  We were also reminded to save electricity by turning off light switches and fans before going to class and to conserve water as best as possible.  What I got from observation in the iium campus there is a food bank set up for anyone in need such as flood victims. and in mahallah aminah there is a shelter for cats that has been established by the abu hurairah club. at cfs gambang there is also a wellness room that has food and clothes. and in tasik maryam there are changes in terms of hygiene that have been carried out by iium. Challenges & Role of Institutions For Sustainable Development

Besides, there also a role of Institutions which are understood as institutional mechanisms are defined as formal systems of rules and indicate what they should facilitate. Institutions in this sense are constitutional rules, organizational rules and standing orders of different governmental bodies, associations, unions, written agreements. Sustainable development is a long-term solution to how we plan our indefinite progress in the future without causing damage to the environment so as to guarantee a safe habitat for the next generations, who will continue to develop their economies, societies, and care for the environment with a similar ideal in mind.
