Introduction to Sustainable Development

SCSH 1201 (Sustainable Development : Issues, Principles, & Practices)

Venue : KICT Cafe and KICT Compound (Physically face to face) 


The first meeting of this class is face-to-face with the lecturer prof. Dr Suhaimi and classmates held at KICT compound and KICT cafe. prof. Dr Suhaimi took us for a walk around KICT to introduce the faculty building while explaining the meaning of introducing sustainable development and what examples of sustainable development exist in the area. 



We also found out the existence of MK kitchen which is located in the KICT cafe is one of the SDG projects that have been carried out by the iium economics lecturers to provide food assistance to anyone in need.




Sustainable means ' able to maintain'. Sustainable Development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs and advocated integration of environmental considerations into all aspects of economic and development policy in order to meet this goal.

The Brundtland Report (1987)

One of Sustainable development definitions is " to improve the quality of life while living within the carrying capacity of the ecosystem".

The sustainable development also include :

  • 1. Living good life
  • 2. Thinking about future generations
  • 3. Systematic planning
  • 4. Dynamic process

Nowadays, as we know sustainable development is decreasing due to human activities such as illegal logging which causes animals to lose their shelter and food sources, oil and smoke emissions from factories, and carbon dioxide emissions into the air which cause air pollution and many more.


Three types of Sustainable Development which are economic development, social sustainability, and environmental conservation. The fundamental principles of Sustainable Development has 5P – People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, Partnership.

In conclusion, I just know and understand the definition of sustainable development in learning this subject. Before this, I did not have the opportunity to study this field and I will practice it in my daily life and will teach others to understand about sustainable development.

Field Work - On Campus Observation

SCSH 1201 (Sustainable Development : Issues, Principles, & Practices) 14/12/2022 (week 9) Wednesday, 11.15 a.m - 12 a.m Venue : Class online on Zoom In this lesson, there were six common indicator for campus sustainability which is Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation and Setting and Infrastucture. I also found out that there is a sustainable development building near the KICT faculty.  We were also reminded to save electricity by turning off light switches and fans before going to class and to conserve water as best as possible.  What I got from observation in the iium campus there is a food bank set up for anyone in need such as flood victims. and in mahallah aminah there is a shelter for cats that has been established by the abu hurairah club. at cfs gambang there is also a wellness room that has food and clothes. and in tasik maryam there are changes in terms of hygiene that have been carried out by iium. Challenges & Role of Institutions For Sustainable Development

Besides, there also a role of Institutions which are understood as institutional mechanisms are defined as formal systems of rules and indicate what they should facilitate. Institutions in this sense are constitutional rules, organizational rules and standing orders of different governmental bodies, associations, unions, written agreements. Sustainable development is a long-term solution to how we plan our indefinite progress in the future without causing damage to the environment so as to guarantee a safe habitat for the next generations, who will continue to develop their economies, societies, and care for the environment with a similar ideal in mind.
